The Bumblebee Otocinclus is a tiny and eye-catching freshwater catfish that is well suited to peaceful nano and planted aquariums. Reaching only around 2 cm, this species is small in size but full of personality, spending much of its time exploring surfaces and grazing on algae and biofilm.
These fish are peaceful and social, so they are best kept in groups of six or more. Because of their delicate nature, they should not be housed with large, aggressive, or predatory fish. A mature, fully cycled aquarium is especially important, as Bumblebee Otocinclus can be sensitive to sudden changes in water conditions.
A planted aquarium with driftwood, natural surfaces, and gentle water movement makes an excellent environment. Driftwood and other surfaces can encourage the growth of algae and biofilm, which form an important part of their natural diet. They can also be supplemented with algae wafers, sinking foods, and vegetables such as blanched zucchini or spinach.
Their striking appearance makes them particularly desirable. Their dark body is decorated with bold pale bands and shimmering speckles, while their unusual facial markings and prominent dorsal fin give them a distinctive look. The species is native to areas around Iquitos in Peru, where it has been recorded in the Río Nanay and Río Tigre.
